  • Servings: 2

Hmiss or Felfla is an Algerian salad of roasted peppers and tomatoes and is one of the most popular appetisers during the month of Ramadan. It can be served warm or cold. It’s usually enjoyed with a good bread.

In the other parts of North Africa, such as Tunisia or Morocco, it’s called respectively Salata Mechouia and Taktouka.

In Tunisia, Salata Mechouia (meaning roasted salad in Arabic) is often served with canned tuna, hard-boiled eggs and black olives.

In Morocco, Taktouka is occasionally prepared with cumin, fresh coriander or parsley!

Ingredients

  • 3 capsicum peppers (any colour) roasted and skin peeled
  • 2 tomatoes, roasted and skin removed
  • 2 or 3 garlic cloves, finely minced
  • 2 tbsp of olive oil + extra for drizzle
  • Salt & pepper, to taste

Method

Step 1

I do not grill the peppers whole (as some do) but cut them into 2, lengthwise, to remove the seeds and the white stalks. When the peppers are cleaned, put them under the grill or on an open fire. When cooked and nicely charred, put the peppers in a plastic bag for few minutes to enable an easy peeling of their skins. Peel the skin off the tomatoes as well.

Step 2

Once peeled, coarsely chop the peppers and the tomatoes then put them in a pan with the olive oil, the minced garlic and the seasonings. Stir fry for 1 or 2 minutes over a medium heat. Serve warm or cold with a drizzle of olive oil.
